Rodent droppings or nesting, mold or persistent water staining, smoke damage, or insulation that has been soaked and compressed. Also remove if you are converting to a spray-foamed unvented roof deck.

Suspected vermiculite is a special case: it may contain asbestos. Do not disturb it — get it tested and, if positive, hire a licensed abatement contractor.

Rent a gas insulation vacuum with a long hose and disposal bags ($200–$400 per day). Run the hose through a window or the gable end, not through the living space. One person feeds insulation into the nozzle, one manages bags outside.

For batts, bagging by hand into contractor bags is often faster than vacuuming, and cheaper. Seal each bag in the attic before carrying it down.

Full-face or half-face respirator with P100 cartridges, disposable coveralls, gloves and goggles. Hang plastic sheeting at the hatch and run a fan blowing out a window to keep dust from migrating.

Most transfer stations accept bagged insulation as construction debris; contaminated material may need special handling. Budget for a dump run or a small dumpster.

Once the deck is clear, this is the perfect moment to air seal every penetration properly before the new insulation goes in.
