Costs & R-Value
Attic Insulation Cost
Attic work is the cheapest square footage in the house to insulate and the most productive. Here is what it costs at each size and depth.
Updated January 2026 · about 7 min read
Cost by attic size (blown to R-49, installed)
800 sq ft: $1,250–$2,100. 1,000 sq ft: $1,550–$2,600. 1,500 sq ft: $2,300–$3,900. 2,000 sq ft: $3,100–$5,200. 2,500 sq ft: $3,900–$6,500.
DIY material for the same jobs is roughly 40–50% of those figures, with the blower usually free against a bag minimum.
What should be in the quote
Air sealing of top plates and penetrations, baffles at every soffit bay, dams around flues and non-IC cans, an insulated hatch cover, depth markers, and cleanup. A bid that is only 'blow R-49' and nothing else is not a complete job.

Add-ons that change the number
Removing contaminated insulation: $1.00–$2.25 per sq ft. Attic hatch or ladder cover: $80–$250. Baffles: $2–$5 each installed. Bath fan re-ducting to the exterior: $200–$500 each. Knob-and-tube remediation: significant, and required before insulating in most jurisdictions.
Payback
Going from R-11 to R-49 in a cold climate typically cuts total heating and cooling costs by 10–20%. On a $2,200 annual energy bill that is $220–$440 a year — a 6–12 year payback installed, and 3–6 years DIY, before rebates.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does it cost to insulate a 1,500 sq ft attic?
- About $2,300–$3,900 installed at R-49, or roughly $900–$1,600 in materials as a DIY job.
- Is attic insulation tax deductible?
- The federal 25C credit covers 30% of insulation and air-sealing material costs, up to $1,200 per year. Labor for insulation does not qualify, but DIY materials do.
- How often should attic insulation be replaced?
- Rarely. Dry, clean insulation lasts decades. Top it up when depth is below target, or replace it after water, fire or rodent damage.
