Best Garage Door Insulation Kits of 2026

A garage door kit is one of the cheapest R-value upgrades available: $80–$200 and an afternoon takes a door from about R-2 to R-6 or better.

Kit types

Rigid polystyrene panel kits: highest R (R-6 to R-9), rigid, cut with a knife, held by clips or adhesive. Reflective bubble kits: lower R but excellent against radiant heat in hot climates and very easy to fit. Vinyl-faced fiberglass batt kits: mid R, softest, cheapest.

Measure your panel count

Standard 16 ft double doors have 4–5 sections with 4–5 panels each, so 16–25 panels. Kits are usually sold for 8 or 9 panels — check the count and panel size before ordering rather than assuming one kit does one door.

Watch the door springs

Adding 15–30 lbs of insulation can unbalance the door. After installation, disconnect the opener and lift the door halfway by hand: it should stay put. If it falls or flies up, have the spring tension adjusted — this is not a DIY job on torsion springs.

Do the seals too

A new bottom seal, perimeter stop weatherstripping and a threshold strip usually matter as much as the panels. Cold air comes in around the door, not just through it.

What R-value should a garage door be?
R-6 to R-9 is a realistic and worthwhile target for a retrofit kit; factory-insulated doors run R-9 to R-18.
Will insulation break my garage door opener?
Not if the springs are rebalanced. Check the manual lift test after installing and have the springs adjusted if the door no longer holds position.
How many kits do I need for a double door?
Count your panels: most double doors need two 8- or 9-panel kits.
